Pettis County Courthouse Murals

Blog #9-  the Sedalia Murals-July 3, 2012

Today we will tour the Courthouse in Sedalia which houses the magnificent " Sedalia Murals", depicting the history of Pettis County of which Sedalia is the County seat.  Built in 1924, the Courthouse proudly displays the Circuit Courtroom Murals. Barbara Manes Campbell, St. Louis Muralist and Restorationist,  was commissioned to restore the 100 year old painting of Lady Justice behind the Judge's bench and to paint murals for the remaining panels in the courtroom, depicting the history of Pettis County from the early 1800's to the present. Lady Justice first hung in the former Courthouse built in 1884 and destroyed by fire June 10, 1920. It was saved from the fire, but never had been cleaned and restretched. After the restoration of Lady Justice in 1997, Campbell then began the Mural project and completed them in 2002. Of note is the fact that Ms. Campbell had MS, and a rod inserted in her back and painted every one of the murals! amazing!!!
